In aquaculture, tilapia ranks third as most important fish after carps and salmonids (Wikipedia). Some Asian countries like Philippines, they call the large tilapia as Pla-Pla. It is often raised in aquariums for consumption or as food source. The rapid growth is one of the tilapia's characteristic, this is why most fish farmer preferred to culture or propagate. High volume stocking of tilapia into a large container or fish tanks is another factor. Also, tilapia can tolerate a poor water quality.
Male tilapia are preferred to culture due to its fast growth. Most techniques are used or have been developed, sex reversal is the most commonly used procedure.
The process of sex reversal refers to a possible intervention of the gonadal at the early stage of life of a recently hatched tilapia fry. Fishes that are treated with this sex reversal process from the beginning to end of this early gonadal development will results to highly skewed fish population to male tilapia.
